Part of the University of the Arts Helsinki, Sibelius Academy is internationally recognised for its rigorous audition process and attracts aspiring musicians from across the world. According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, it is ranked ninth globally for Music and 14th for Performing Arts.

For a student from Surat, a city better known for its diamond and textile industries than higher music education, securing admission to Finland’s premier music academy marks a significant achievement.

Vanya’s journey reflects the aspirations of many young Indians pursuing careers in the performing arts. Although she began learning Indian classical music during childhood, she was initially uncertain whether music could become a full-time profession.

She went on to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Western Classical Vocal Music at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru. During her undergraduate studies, she was selected to play Eliza Doolittle, the lead role in the musical My Fair Lady. The production received a standing ovation and further strengthened her resolve to pursue music professionally.

Following graduation, she successfully auditioned for Sibelius Academy and secured admission to its Global Music Master’s programme.

Vanya hopes to combine her foundation in Indian classical music with Western classical and global musical traditions to create original compositions rooted in Indian musical heritage while appealing to international audiences.

Rajiv Soni, one of South East Asia’s leading student immigration consultants, who has guided thousands of students to universities abroad, including Finland, described the admission as a rare achievement.

”In my career of guiding students to Finland and other international destinations, this is the first time I have seen a student from Gujarat secure admission to the Sibelius Academy. It is a remarkable achievement and reflects both exceptional talent and dedication,” Soni said.

According to Soni, students from Gujarat have increasingly chosen Finland for higher education over the past decade, primarily in engineering, information technology, business and healthcare. Admissions to globally recognised music academies, however, remain uncommon because of the specialised training required and the highly competitive selection process.

Vanya’s achievement reflects a growing willingness among Indian students to explore careers beyond conventional professional disciplines and highlights the increasing presence of Indian talent in internationally recognised institutions for the performing arts.

She is expected to begin her studies in Helsinki later this year, where she plans to explore musical traditions from around the world while developing original compositions inspired by India's rich musical heritage.

Established in 1949, ABVP is considered one of the largest student organizations in the world today. From a historical perspective, whether during the movement against the Emergency or the anti-corruption mass movements, ABVP's young activists were always at the forefront. However, for some time now, ABVP appears to be weakening or losing acceptance in college campus politics and in the minds of students. Several reasons are responsible for this declining acceptance, but the most prominent and analytical reason is that over the past few years, whenever a major student or mass movement erupts, ABVP keeps itself away from it. This article presents a neutral and deep analysis of this issue.

The true identity of any student body, organization, or political wing is established when it connects with the emotions and genuine problems of students and the general public. When a major mass movement, a protest against educational policies, a movement against unemployment, or a local mass protest erupts in the country or state, the eyes of the youth generation and general public are set on ABVP—because there is hope and expectation that ABVP will provide the right direction and guidance. However, currently, when a mass movement emerges whose direction goes against government policies, ABVP maintains silence or clearly stays away from the protest. The primary reason for this is that ABVP is directly associated with the ruling party (BJP). To ensure that the ruling party's image is not impacted, ABVP is kept away from student interests and mass movements.

When ABVP distances itself from mass movements, the impact on its acceptance is deep:

Identity as a Government Entity: Ordinary students and people in academia begin to hold the perception that ABVP is no longer an independent student body, but has become a "PR agency" or a "government department" of the ruling party. When students and the public are on the streets and the student wing remains silent or absent, its moral acceptance comes to an end.

Distancing from the Mandate and Public Sentiment: Mass movements are collective explosions of suppressed public emotions. If activists of a large organization like ABVP do not jump into these movements or become active to offer guidance, the younger generation believes that this organization only knows how to play in the corridors of power, lacking the capacity to stand with students and the public in their distress.

Giving an Opportunity to Opposition Parties and Other Organizations: When ABVP stays away from mass movements, the entire opportunity goes to other student bodies, leftist wings, or independent student leaders. They take to the streets, increase their acceptance, and establish ABVP as a government-aligned organization. In campus politics, where slogans of "revolution" and "protest" echo, being absent from mass movements is suicidal for ABVP.

ABVP's core ideology is rooted in cultural nationalism and educational reforms. However, today's youth (Gen Z) cannot live on ideology alone. Today's student issues are highly practical and immediate: unemployment, rising fees/remuneration, privatization, lack of democracy on college campuses, and ideological balance. When a mass movement breaks out over these issues, ABVP faces two choices: either stand with the students and corner government policies, or remain silent to protect the government. Unfortunately, due to organizational discipline and political pressure today, ABVP chooses the second option. This sends a message that "ideology and power" matter more to ABVP than "students' problems." This mindset breaks the faith that students have in ABVP.

In today's campuses, students are acutely aware through various information sources. In the era of social media, no mass movement can be suppressed. When ABVP leaders appear on television channels praising or defending the government while thousands of students are out on the streets, an atmosphere of anger and despair develops among the youth.

Acceptance is never gained through power; it comes through sacrifice, dedication, and standing on the streets with the people. Historically, ABVP fought against the Emergency, earning nationwide acceptance. Today, however, when a mass movement breaks out, ABVP prefers silence over playing that historical role. As a result, its perception is shifting from a "struggling student wing" to an "auxiliary wing of the ruling party."

Looking at this neutrally, no questions can be raised regarding the dedication, ideology, or hard work of ABVP's activists. ABVP remains at the forefront of social service, academic seminars, and awareness drives across college campuses nationwide. But when "politics" and "mass movements" confront each other, ABVP's dilemma increases. There is a silent discontent within the organization as well, as many sincere activists believe that voices must be raised against the government for student interests, but orders from top leadership force them to stay away from mass movements.

In conclusion, ABVP's current weakness lies not in the dedication or numerical strength of its activists, but in its "direction" and "political compulsions." As long as ABVP hesitates to participate fearlessly in mass movements and continues to ignore public sentiment to protect the ruling party's image, its acceptance will continue to decline. The true strength of a student wing is to act as a mirror to the government, not its instrument. If ABVP wants to regain its lost acceptance in college campuses and in the minds of the public, it must set aside the government's political interests during mass movements and take to the streets solely in the interest of students and the public. Until this happens, ABVP will remain a large organization, but the identity and acceptance it built over decades as a student wing that respects public sentiment will gradually fade away.

However, the recent movement sparked by paper leaks and the grace marks controversy surrounding 'NEET' and other competitive examinations such as UGC-NET and CUET stands out significantly from traditional protests. This movement has put not just the educational system, but the credibility of the Central Government, the efficiency of the National Testing Agency (NTA), and the accountability of the Education Minister directly in the dock.

A 'Leaderless' Yet Effective Digital Satyagraha

In traditional movements, a specific leader or political party's face leads from the front. But the greatest defining feature of the NEET movement is that it remained spontaneous and decentralized. It has no single specific 'face'; instead, thousands of students across cities like Patna, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kota collectively became the face of this movement.

Social Media Platforms

On Instagram, X/Twitter, and YouTube, the youth amplified their demands and presented their views. Students from ordinary middle-class families—who study day and night for years to prepare—shared their pain, evidence of paper leaks, and viral videos highlighting NTA's negligence. These young faces proved that today's youth are no longer dependent on political party posters or leaders; they are fighting for their rights on their own. This fusion of digital and ground-level protest became a force that proved impossible for politicians and the government to suppress.

Resignation of the Education Minister: Whose Responsibility?
The most impactful demand of this movement was the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The argument from students and opposition parties was that as the head of the country's education and examination system, the ultimate and complete responsibility lies with the Minister. When an institution like the NTA repeatedly fails, when the paper leak mafia operates fearlessly, and when the future of millions of students is pushed into darkness, holding the ministerial position on moral grounds is untenable.

The opposition parties surrounded the government on this issue in both houses of Parliament. Students organized silent sit-ins and hunger strikes ranging from Delhi's Jantar Mantar to Rajghat. The government responded with orders for a CBI investigation and replaced the head of the NTA, but the youth remained adamant that "as long as the Minister remains in office, reform in the system is impossible." The protesting youth stood firm on their demand, and ultimately, the country's Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, had to resign, forcing the government to yield.

From the perspective of political analysts, the demand for the Education Minister's resignation was not merely about removing an individual, but an attempt to demand clarity of accountability. For the current government, this was a deeply embarrassing political situation as its claims of 'good governance' and 'transparency' were proven hollow in front of the youth.

The NEET movement has set a new precedent in India's political and social framework. Let us understand the possibilities and impacts of such movements in the coming times:

The Era of Issue-Based Politics: The youth will no longer remain a vote bank swayed solely by religion, caste, or regional identity. Employment, merit, and transparency are issues directly tied to the emotions of young people. In upcoming elections, young voters will favor candidates who guarantee a 'paper-leak-free' system and 'employment'. It will be difficult for any government to ignore this anger among the youth.
2. Rethinking the 'One Nation, One Exam' Policy: The government's 'One Nation, One Exam' policy (NEET, CUET, JEE, SSC) now finds itself under a cloud of suspicion and questioning. In the future, any irregularity in a central examination will trigger an immediate nationwide protest. The youth will no longer hesitate to protest against state or central governments.
3. Demands for Legal Reforms and Strict Punishment: Future movements will not remain confined to the streets; they will demand judicial intervention and legal reforms. While states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have enacted strict laws against paper leaks, the youth will now demand stringent central-level legislation treating 'paper leakers' and 'coaching mafias' with penalties as severe as treason.
4. Use of Social Media and AI: Digital footprints will be far stronger in future movements. The youth will utilize AI and data analysis to gather evidence of government oversights or failures. Whether the government's IT Cell can withstand the digital satyagraha of the youth is also a open question, given that the youth possess real-time data and ground reality.

In conclusion, the NEET movement is a warning. It serves as a reminder to the ruling powers that India's youth is no longer an 'inanimate voter'—they are aware, they ask questions, and they demand accountability. If the government fails to take the faces and demands of the youth student movement seriously and does not implement swift, fundamental reforms in the system, difficult times lie ahead. In the future, even a minor mistake in recruitment exams like SSC, Railways, Banking, or others could spark a massive uprising. The true strength of a democracy lies not in authority, but in this young generation that dares to question authority. Rather than treating protests as a law-and-order problem, the government must view them as an opportunity for constructive, dialogue-driven nation-building.

However, petrol pump dealers are now raising another concern. They claim that ethanol's hygroscopic nature—the ability to absorb moisture from the air—could increase the risk of water contamination in fuel during the monsoon and in coastal regions. This may affect both fuel quality and vehicle performance. According to a report by The Hindu, petrol pump dealers have recently highlighted this issue.

What is the concern?

Petrol pump dealers say that ethanol present in E20 fuel readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. Earlier, pure petrol was used, which does not attract moisture. As a result, underground storage tanks faced relatively fewer issues related to water contamination.

With E20 fuel, however, if moisture enters underground tanks through the vent system or due to humid conditions, ethanol can absorb that moisture. If the water content becomes excessive, phase separation may occur, where the ethanol-water mixture separates from petrol. In such cases, water-contaminated fuel may reach vehicle engines.

Why is the risk higher during monsoon and in coastal regions?

During the monsoon, Relative Humidity (RH) often exceeds 90%. Weather reports regularly publish RH values to indicate the amount of moisture in the air.

In coastal cities such as Surat, Mumbai and Chennai, humidity remains high throughout the year, not just during the rainy season. As a result, petrol pumps in these regions may face a greater risk of moisture-related fuel contamination year-round.

Possible impact on vehicles

Difficulty in starting the engine
Engine misfiring or jerking
Reduced fuel efficiency
Damage to the fuel pump and injectors
Increased risk of corrosion over time

What are petrol pump dealers saying?

Dealers argue that many underground fuel storage tanks across the country were originally designed for conventional petrol. Not all fuel stations have upgraded moisture-control systems or storage infrastructure suitable for higher ethanol blends such as E20. Therefore, they believe the problem could become more noticeable during the monsoon.

https://twitter.com/Benarasiyaa/status/2077378675964776800

How was moisture managed earlier?

Underground fuel tanks are generally made of steel. Even in the past, small amounts of water could enter tanks due to condensation or humid weather, especially in coastal regions. Oil companies routinely inspected tanks, removed accumulated water, and took measures to prevent corrosion.

However, with ethanol's moisture-absorbing properties, experts believe there is a possibility that more water could accumulate in fuel than before. This could also increase the risk of corrosion in storage tanks. The issue requires further scientific study and appropriate technical solutions.

Advice for vehicle owners

Refuel only at trusted petrol pumps with high fuel turnover.
If you notice sudden engine starting issues, jerks, or reduced mileage, get your vehicle inspected immediately.
Follow the E20 fuel guidelines issued by your vehicle manufacturer.

He had made similar remarks after a recent Cabinet meeting and had even advised ministers to take precautions against the heat.

The moment the Prime Minister chose to discuss heat waves in Mann Ki Baat, some critics questioned the relevance of such a message. Why would the Prime Minister of a country spend valuable airtime advising people to drink water and avoid heat exposure? What larger purpose does such a message serve?

To answer that question, it is important to look at Mann Ki Baat not as a conventional political speech, but as a long-term communication platform. An analysis of the programme over the last year reveals a consistent pattern and a broader agenda.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi appears to use Mann Ki Baat as a tool to shape India's social and national priorities. Rather than announcing government schemes or engaging in political debates, the programme focuses on citizen responsibility, social participation, cultural pride, innovation, and nation-building.

Viewed in this context, the discussion on extreme heat was not merely a weather advisory. The underlying message was that challenges facing the nation cannot be addressed by the government alone. Citizens must also play an active role in responding to issues that affect society. This thinking is closely linked to Modi's recurring theme of “Jan Bhagidari” or people's participation.

Almost every episode of Mann Ki Baat highlights stories of ordinary Indians achieving extraordinary results. Whether it is a village conserving water, a young innovator solving a local problem, a woman leading social change, or an athlete bringing glory to the nation, these stories reinforce one central idea: every citizen has a role in nation-building.

An analysis of the programme over the last twelve months reveals five major messages.

1. Viksit Bharat

The first and most prominent theme is the vision of a developed India. Modi repeatedly conveys that India is progressing not only economically but also socially and culturally towards becoming a leading nation in the world.

2. Jan Bhagidari

The second theme is citizen participation. Development cannot be achieved by government efforts alone. It requires the active involvement of every Indian. Even the recent warning about heat waves reflects this belief that public awareness and collective action are essential.

3. Cultural Confidence

A third recurring theme is cultural self-confidence. Mann Ki Baat frequently discusses India's traditions, festivals, local languages, heritage, and indigenous knowledge. The programme seeks to promote modernization without disconnecting from cultural roots.

4. Youth and Innovation

The fourth theme is the role of youth in shaping India's future. Startups, young scientists, athletes, entrepreneurs, and innovators regularly feature in the programme. The message is clear: India's future growth will be driven by creativity, innovation, and youthful energy.

5. National Pride

The fifth and perhaps broadest theme is national pride. The programme consistently encourages Indians to have confidence in their country's achievements, capabilities, culture, and global standing.

From a political communication perspective, Mann Ki Baat functions less as a platform for government announcements and more as a mechanism to influence public attitudes, behaviour, and priorities. Direct political attacks and electoral rhetoric are largely absent. Instead, the programme relies on inspirational stories, social campaigns, and positive examples to create a shared national vision.

That is why the topics discussed in Mann Ki Baat change every month, while the underlying message remains remarkably consistent.
