Purnesh Modi won the Surat West seat in the Gujarat Assembly elections of 2012 and 2017 as a BJP candidate. In 2021, he was appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Roads and Buildings in the Bhupendra Patel-led government. During this tenure, he successfully led the BJP's campaign in Ward No. 07 (Vavol-Kolvada) of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation elections, where the party won with a massive majority.

He also maintains strong ties with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Sangh Parivar and plays an active role in Ganesh Utsav committees in Surat — factors that have strengthened his hold in socio-religious circles.

However, his political journey has not been without controversy. He gained nationwide attention for filing a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi over the latter's remarks concerning the “Modi” surname.

This case gave him the image of a fearless leader at the national level. Additionally, his long-standing differences with Gujarat BJP president C.R. Patil have been a subject of constant speculation. These differences point to internal factionalism within the party, which may be influencing Modi’s political trajectory.

Currently, Purnesh Modi is considered to be in a state of "power exile" — holding no significant post in either the government or the party organization. The dominance of C.R. Patil in the internal politics of Gujarat BJP and Modi’s proximity to socio-religious groups make his return to power a complicated equation.

The party leadership now faces a critical decision — should it leverage Modi’s public influence and popularity by bringing him back into the Cabinet or assigning him a key organizational role?

On the flip side, in urban strongholds like Surat — where the BJP enjoys a firm grip — Purnesh Modi’s local popularity and strong network among cultural and religious groups could work in his favor.

His active participation in public events like Ganesh Utsav ensures his continued grassroots connect. His political future now depends largely on how the BJP leadership chooses to utilize his experience and outreach.

If the party decides to capitalize on his political and social capital, he could be offered a ministerial berth or an important organizational role. However, if internal power equations and factional dominance prevail, his political exile may continue.

Purnesh Modi’s political comeback hinges on BJP’s internal strategy and his equation with C.R. Patil. Given his experience and consistent public presence, a return to power is possible, but it will require a careful balancing of internal party dynamics.
