Gujarat’s political landscape has always played an important role in shaping national politics. Even in 2025, the majority of voters in the state place trust in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). For decades now, the BJP has a firm grip on Gujarat, and despite opposition efforts, its popularity shows no signs of waning. 

From Keshubhai to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani, and now Bhupendra Patel, the BJP has written a saga of electoral success in the state.

One of the key reasons for the BJP’s sustained success in Gujarat is its stable and development-oriented leadership. Particularly during Narendra Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister, Gujarat witnessed unprecedented growth. 

The much-talked-about “Gujarat Model” of governance brought industrial, economic, and social development to the forefront. Anandiben Patel and Vijay Rupani carried forward this legacy, and current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel continues to uphold the public trust through his consistent governance and welfare-focused policies. This continuity in leadership has made BJP a dependable political choice for the electorate.

While opposition parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress have attempted to challenge the BJP’s dominance, their efforts have so far been unable to shake the party’s stronghold. A major reason behind this is the BJP’s robust organizational structure and deep penetration into both urban and rural areas. 

Though there has been some weakening in party organization over the past 4-5 years, the BJP’s widespread network still enables it to effectively understand and address the issues faced by people. The party continues to enjoy immense popularity among the middle class and the youth, primarily due to its focus on employment, education, and infrastructure development.

Admittedly, some discontent is evident among Gujarat’s voters. The BJP government has faced criticism on various issues such as farmer distress, quality of education, frequent infrastructure failures like collapsing bridges, and concerns over drug trafficking. 

Yet, a significant section of voters still views the BJP as the most credible option when compared to alternatives. The internal instability and lack of clear vision within opposition parties have only strengthened the BJP’s standing.

In conclusion, the trust placed by Gujarat’s voters in the BJP is the result of a decades-long journey of victories. The party’s consistent leadership, developmental agenda, and committed grassroots workers have made it nearly invincible in the state’s political arena. However, to maintain this trust in the future, the BJP will need to seriously address the emerging concerns of its electorate. As of today, Gujarat’s voters stand firmly with the BJP, and this trust will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the political future of the state.

The absence of young Muslim leadership in Gujarat’s politics is a real and complex issue rooted in social, political, and historical contexts. While major parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dominate the state's political scene, meaningful representation of young Muslim leaders remains scarce.

One of the key reasons is political polarization. The 2002 Godhra incident and the communal violence that followed significantly deepened the divide between Hindu and Muslim communities in the state. 

Since then, many political parties have been reluctant to field Muslim candidates, fearing a backlash or loss of votes due to polarization. This has especially hindered the rise of new and young Muslim faces, as parties tend to favor experienced and recognizable figures.

Secondly, there is a relative lack of educational and economic empowerment within the Muslim community, particularly among youth. Compared to other communities, Muslim youth often lack the confidence, resources, and networks necessary to rise through political ranks. Even when political awareness exists, the absence of social and financial support limits their ability to make an impact.

Another factor is the internal structure of political parties. Leadership opportunities are often controlled by dominant caste groups and well-established figures within parties. Muslim youth are rarely given chances to ascend to influential positions. For example, in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, major parties gave very few tickets to Muslim candidates, and almost none to emerging young leaders from the community.

Moreover, conservative mindsets and fear of political backlash or violence discourage many young Muslims from entering the political arena. Concerns about communal tensions, social boycotts, and safety often outweigh the motivation to participate in active politics.

However, the rise of education and social media is slowly sparking political awareness and engagement among young Muslims. This change has the potential to reduce the leadership gap in the future.

To address this issue, political parties must actively encourage and nurture Muslim youth leadership. This includes creating more educational and leadership opportunities, ensuring equal representation, and fostering a social environment of trust and inclusivity. Only then can Gujarat’s political space become truly representative of all its communities.

Gujarat’s political identity has long been shaped by the dominance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). From city squares to rural alleys, the BJP’s position is strong, consistent, and strategically aligned with the  needs and emotions of the people. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress remains in search of its lost connect with Gujarat’s voters.

Why BJP Still Rules Gujarat

Congress: Still a Stranger to the Streets

Once a powerful force in Gujarat, the Congress now struggles with weak organization, unclear messaging, and a leadership vacuum. Young voters—many of whom have grown up under BJP rule—feel no connect with the Congress’s legacy or vision. Without influential local leaders or on-the-ground momentum, the party continues to lag behind.

Is a Comeback Possible?

A turnaround for Congress is not impossible—but it requires more than slogans. The party must invest in regional leadership, grassroots mobilization, and development-centric narratives that matter to modern Gujaratis. With rising expectations and a potential leadership transition post-Modi, BJP too faces challenges ahead.

C.R. Patil, born in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, and a resident of Gujarat since 1953, was appointed the Gujarat BJP state president in 2020 and later became the Union Minister of Jal Shakti in 2024. As the first non-Gujarati to lead the Gujarat BJP, his rise highlights the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) willingness to prioritize organizational skills and loyalty over regional identity. Patil’s Marathi origin did not hinder his ascent.

This kind of acceptance would be hard to imagine in states where regional identity is politically weaponized. In Gujarat, what matters more is contribution and capability — not where one is born. Patil is not an exception. Gujarat has, time and again, shown a political and social openness that allows people from different backgrounds to thrive.

Maharashtra has a deep-rooted Marathi linguistic and cultural identity, reinforced by the Samyukta Maharashtra movement of the 1950s, which led to the state’s formation. Regional parties like Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) often champion “Marathi Manoos” sentiments. Unlike Gujarat, where Patil’s long residence and fluency in Gujarati mitigated the “outsider” tag, a non-Marathi leader in Maharashtra might face greater scrutiny.

Shiv Sena and MNS capitalize on Marathi identity, and a non-Marathi leader could provide them with ammunition to portray the any party as disconnected from Maharashtra’s ethos. This risk is higher in Maharashtra than in Gujarat.

Maharashtra could theoretically appoint a non-Marathi BJP state president or central minister, but the decision would require careful navigation of regional sentiments. 

On the other hand, despite the Gujarati community’s significant presence in Mumbai, very few Gujaratis have reached positions of true power in Maharashtra politics. Some names stand out — Gopal Shetty,Kirit Somaiya, and Manoj Kotak — all from BJP, representing constituencies with heavy Gujarati populations. However, even their rise has been relatively modest compared to their influence on the ground.

In the diverse fabric of India, where linguistic and regional identities often shape political narratives, Gujarat and Maharashtra offer two strikingly different approaches to regional inclusion — especially when it comes to accepting leaders or communities from outside their linguistic majorities.

Gujarat’s political culture has largely revolved around development, business, and pragmatism. In such a framework, regional identity becomes secondary to contribution and performance. Whether it's migrants from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, or even North India, Gujarat has historically shown a remarkable ability to absorb and integrate.

The entrepreneurial spirit of Gujaratis may also explain this — in business and in politics,results matter more than roots.

As India inches closer to becoming a truly inclusive democracy, states like Gujarat provide not just economic models to follow, but also social templates worth emulating.

Marathas have had a presence in Surat’s politics since the 17th century when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj challenged the Nawab of Surat. However, in modern India, the emergence of Maratha politics in Surat can be traced back to the 1990s. During that period, many Marathi-speaking people from Khandesh migrated in search of jobs, primarily joining the police force. 

Khandesh, located on Gujarat’s southeastern border, had limited employment opportunities. Since local Gujarati youth showed less interest in joining the police, recruitment policies favored migrants from Maharashtra.

At the time, the Congress party dominated politics, and while there were a few Marathi leaders, they remained confined to the municipal level due to the small Marathi-speaking population. However, post-1996, industrialization led to a surge in factories, drawing in workers from Maharashtra, especially Khandesh, as well as other regions.

With the growing voter base, political ambitions among Marathi leaders also increased. A significant shift occurred when Congress lost its dominance, and the BJP came to power. Leaders like Ravindra Patil rose to the position of Deputy Mayor, and C.R. Patil began to establish himself.

Currently, the Marathi-speaking voter base is estimated to be around one million. C.R. Patil has since become the President of Gujarat BJP and a Union Minister, while Sangeeta Patil has secured her position as an MLA for the third consecutive term. 

The Future of Maratha Politics in Surat 

The key question is whether Maratha political dominance will continue in the future. Experts believe that Maratha politics in Surat has reached its peak, but a leadership vacuum may arise in the next 2-3 years. Currently, no strong second-rank leaders have emerged, creating a potential power gap. However, some young leaders are preparing to step into this space. 

Future Maratha Leaders 

Jignesh Patil (Son of C.R. Patil) 

Jignesh is active in social work and sports. He focuses on grassroots development programs and enjoys popularity among the youth. He serves as the chairman of the Beach Soccer Committee under the All India Football Federation and leads the NGO ‘Youth for Gujarat,’ which undertakes various development and welfare activities. Despite his father’s busy schedule, he meets with people, listens to their problems, and works toward solutions. 

Dr. Nikhil Patil (Son of Ravindra Patil) 

A doctor by profession, Nikhil runs his own clinic and is an active BJP member. He serves as the president of the Lions Club of Limbayat and the youth president of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial Committee in Limbayat. Recently, he has increased his political activity, evident from the strong support at events like the Shivaji Jayanti celebrations. 

Sunil Patil 

A former General Secretary of BJP’s Youth Wing and an active BJP worker, Sunil is also a young entrepreneur in the textile industry. He is deeply involved in social work and recently gained significant recognition for organizing the largest Shiv Katha event in Surat. He openly expresses his desire to enter politics and is prepared to contest elections if given a ticket. His large-scale organization of Shivaji Jayanti celebrations further indicates his growing political ambitions. 

Samrat Patil 

Like Sunil, Samrat is also a young entrepreneur and is equally active in politics. He played a significant role in organizing the Shiv Katha event and has made all necessary preparations to enter the political arena.  Experts suggest that these Patil brothers have strong backing from top leaders in Delhi and Gandhinagar, which will help them shape their political careers.

Apart from these emerging leaders, other contenders are also working hard to establish themselves. However, the bigger question remains: Will Maratha dominance in Surat’s politics continue, or will Hindi-speaking leaders replace them? Considering the voter demographics, Hindi-speaking voters are almost equal in number to Marathi-speaking voters.
