Unnao Case: Major Setback for Kuldeep Sengar as Supreme Court Halts Delhi HC’s Relief Order
In a significant development in the Unnao rape case, the Supreme Court has delivered a major blow to convicted former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The apex court has stayed the Delhi High Court's order that previously granted relief to Sengar, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.
"No Bail for This Criminal," Observes Court
A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant observed that the allegations against Sengar are of an extremely serious nature. The court remarked that the convict should not be granted bail in any case. While the bench did not deliver a final judgment today, it made its stance clear by staying the High Court’s order immediately.
The court has issued a notice to Sengar's counsel, seeking a response within two weeks. The next hearing for the matter is scheduled to take place in four weeks.
Judicial Proceedings and Victim Rights
During the commencement of the hearing, the Supreme Court clarified that the current discussion would be strictly limited to the issue of the "stay" on the High Court's order. The court also noted that Sengar remains in custody regarding other matters, describing the legal situation as "peculiar."

Furthermore, the court reassured the victim’s side, stating:
No Release: The court explicitly stated that Sengar will not be released at this time.
Right to Appeal: The victim has the inherent right to file a separate Special Leave Petition (SLP) without needing any special prior permission.
Legal Remedies: Addressing concerns from the victim’s lawyer about the family's safety, the bench reminded them that they have full access to legal remedies and the right to appeal.
Stern Warning Against Intimidating the Judiciary
The hearing took a sharp turn when Sengar’s lawyers pointed out that photos of Delhi High Court judges were being circulated on social media with provocative captions.
Justice Surya Kant termed this "unfortunate" and issued a stern warning to those attempting to influence the case through public pressure:
"We are aware that people are trying to take political advantage. Do not try to intimidate the system. You cannot take these matters to the streets. Conduct your arguments inside the courtroom, not outside."

What’s Next?
With the High Court’s relief order now suspended, Kuldeep Sengar will remain behind bars. The legal battle is set to resume next month when the Supreme Court reviews the responses from the involved parties.
