Acceptance of Student Organization ABVP is Declining Due to Power

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), known as the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been an important organization in India's political and student spheres. Established in 1949, ABVP is considered one of the largest student organizations in the world today. From a historical perspective, whether during the movement against the Emergency or the anti-corruption mass movements, ABVP's young activists were always at the forefront. However, for some time now, ABVP appears to be weakening or losing acceptance in college campus politics and in the minds of students. Several reasons are responsible for this declining acceptance, but the most prominent and analytical reason is that over the past few years, whenever a major student or mass movement erupts, ABVP keeps itself away from it. This article presents a neutral and deep analysis of this issue.

The true identity of any student body, organization, or political wing is established when it connects with the emotions and genuine problems of students and the general public. When a major mass movement, a protest against educational policies, a movement against unemployment, or a local mass protest erupts in the country or state, the eyes of the youth generation and general public are set on ABVP—because there is hope and expectation that ABVP will provide the right direction and guidance. However, currently, when a mass movement emerges whose direction goes against government policies, ABVP maintains silence or clearly stays away from the protest. The primary reason for this is that ABVP is directly associated with the ruling party (BJP). To ensure that the ruling party's image is not impacted, ABVP is kept away from student interests and mass movements.

When ABVP distances itself from mass movements, the impact on its acceptance is deep:

Identity as a Government Entity: Ordinary students and people in academia begin to hold the perception that ABVP is no longer an independent student body, but has become a "PR agency" or a "government department" of the ruling party. When students and the public are on the streets and the student wing remains silent or absent, its moral acceptance comes to an end.

Distancing from the Mandate and Public Sentiment: Mass movements are collective explosions of suppressed public emotions. If activists of a large organization like ABVP do not jump into these movements or become active to offer guidance, the younger generation believes that this organization only knows how to play in the corridors of power, lacking the capacity to stand with students and the public in their distress.

Giving an Opportunity to Opposition Parties and Other Organizations: When ABVP stays away from mass movements, the entire opportunity goes to other student bodies, leftist wings, or independent student leaders. They take to the streets, increase their acceptance, and establish ABVP as a government-aligned organization. In campus politics, where slogans of "revolution" and "protest" echo, being absent from mass movements is suicidal for ABVP.

ABVP's core ideology is rooted in cultural nationalism and educational reforms. However, today's youth (Gen Z) cannot live on ideology alone. Today's student issues are highly practical and immediate: unemployment, rising fees/remuneration, privatization, lack of democracy on college campuses, and ideological balance. When a mass movement breaks out over these issues, ABVP faces two choices: either stand with the students and corner government policies, or remain silent to protect the government. Unfortunately, due to organizational discipline and political pressure today, ABVP chooses the second option. This sends a message that "ideology and power" matter more to ABVP than "students' problems." This mindset breaks the faith that students have in ABVP.

In today's campuses, students are acutely aware through various information sources. In the era of social media, no mass movement can be suppressed. When ABVP leaders appear on television channels praising or defending the government while thousands of students are out on the streets, an atmosphere of anger and despair develops among the youth.

Acceptance is never gained through power; it comes through sacrifice, dedication, and standing on the streets with the people. Historically, ABVP fought against the Emergency, earning nationwide acceptance. Today, however, when a mass movement breaks out, ABVP prefers silence over playing that historical role. As a result, its perception is shifting from a "struggling student wing" to an "auxiliary wing of the ruling party."

Looking at this neutrally, no questions can be raised regarding the dedication, ideology, or hard work of ABVP's activists. ABVP remains at the forefront of social service, academic seminars, and awareness drives across college campuses nationwide. But when "politics" and "mass movements" confront each other, ABVP's dilemma increases. There is a silent discontent within the organization as well, as many sincere activists believe that voices must be raised against the government for student interests, but orders from top leadership force them to stay away from mass movements.

In conclusion, ABVP's current weakness lies not in the dedication or numerical strength of its activists, but in its "direction" and "political compulsions." As long as ABVP hesitates to participate fearlessly in mass movements and continues to ignore public sentiment to protect the ruling party's image, its acceptance will continue to decline. The true strength of a student wing is to act as a mirror to the government, not its instrument. If ABVP wants to regain its lost acceptance in college campuses and in the minds of the public, it must set aside the government's political interests during mass movements and take to the streets solely in the interest of students and the public. Until this happens, ABVP will remain a large organization, but the identity and acceptance it built over decades as a student wing that respects public sentiment will gradually fade away.
