Dependence on Imports Hurts Economy; Time to Embrace Local Products
(Utkarsh Patel)
Dependence on foreign goods weakens a country’s economy. When a nation relies too much on imports, it affects its independence and self-respect. Ongoing global conflicts and the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic clearly show that adopting locally made products is essential. This is not just a practical need, but also a responsibility toward the nation and a way to ensure a better standard of living for citizens.
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the risks of relying on foreign supplies. There were shortages of essential items like medicines, vaccines, and masks, leading to the loss of many lives. Later, the country had to quickly shift toward local production, and timely government action helped overcome the crisis. Even today, global tensions such as the Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts in the Middle East are disrupting supply chains. Prices of crude oil, food, and industrial raw materials are rising. In such situations, dependence on imports makes a country more vulnerable.

This is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) has become more relevant than ever. While the government has introduced policies, their success depends on the active participation of every citizen.
Using local products strengthens the economy. When people buy goods made in their own country, money stays within the nation. This supports small businesses, cottage industries, and startups, and creates more job opportunities, especially for young people. Today, Indian youth are leading in fields like science, AI technology, and innovation. With stronger support for local products, they can achieve success within the country instead of seeking opportunities abroad.
Local adoption also benefits farmers, artisans, and the middle class by increasing income and improving livelihoods. It leads to better health, education, and financial stability for citizens.
True patriotism should be reflected not just in speeches but in everyday actions. Every citizen should think about how their purchasing choices can strengthen the country. Promoting the idea of “Vocal for Local” in rural areas can help boost local markets. The government should also support domestic industries through tax benefits, subsidies, and training, while ensuring corruption is eliminated.
It is important to remember that Mahatma Gandhi promoted the idea of self-reliance and swadeshi during the freedom movement. The same path can guide the nation toward a stronger and self-reliant future today.

To ensure a stable and prosperous future for coming generations, adopting local products is the need of the hour. It will reduce unemployment fears among youth and build confidence in shaping the country’s future.
True patriotism lies in dedication to the nation. By choosing local products and becoming self-reliant, we can ensure a dignified life for every citizen and leave behind a strong legacy for future generations.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
