Digital Login Systems Evolve in India as Passkeys Begin Replacing Passwords

The way users log in to digital platforms is undergoing a significant transformation. Traditional passwords, which have been in use for decades, are gradually being replaced by passkey-based login systems, which are widely regarded as more secure and convenient.

Passkeys allow users to sign in without typing a password. Authentication is carried out using a digital credential stored on a mobile phone or computer and verified through fingerprint scanning, Face ID, or a device PIN.

How Passkeys Differ from Passwords

Passwords have long been vulnerable to phishing attacks, data breaches, and hacking incidents. The repeated use of the same password across multiple platforms further increases security risks.

Passkeys, however, store the user’s private authentication key securely on the device itself and do not share it with servers, significantly reducing the risk of cyberattacks.

01

Key Advantages of Passkeys

No need to remember or manage passwords

Strong protection against phishing and hacking

Additional security through biometric authentication

Faster and more user-friendly login process

Challenges in the Indian Context

Despite being viewed as the future of digital authentication, passkeys face several practical challenges in India.

A large number of users in the country share smartphones with family members, while passkeys are designed for personal, device-specific use.
Additionally, account recovery can become difficult if a device is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Limited access to cloud backups and multi-device synchronization also poses a challenge for many users.

Expert Opinion

Technology experts believe that passkeys could eventually replace passwords. However, widespread adoption in India will require improved recovery mechanisms and greater digital awareness among users.
For now, passkeys are considered a safer alternative to traditional passwords, particularly for users who rely on personal devices.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
